The Importance of New Technology in Laser Vision Correction

There are many different styles of laser vision correction. Many people know the most commonly performed procedure is LASIK which stands for Laser-Assisted In Situ Keratomileusis. What that means is a surgical operation to reshape the cornea for vision correction, which the surgeon reshapes the surface layer of the cornea and is separated to create a hinged flap providing access to the inner cornea where varying amounts of tissue are removed by an excimer laser.

However, innovation has lead to more comfortable procedures and different options with varying degrees of correction. For people with lower corrections, there is a procedure called PRK, or photorefractive keratectomy. This procedure is like LASIK, except the correction is done right on the surface of the cornea. It takes a little longer to heal but some consider it a more conservative treatment plan. For people with high to extreme correction, there are implantable contact lens solutions such as the visian implantable contact lens (ICL) or the verasys lens. These are implantable contact lenses that are inserted in front of the natural lens of the eye and behind the cornea. The benefit of these procedures is that no tissue is removed during the vision correction procedure.
