Dr. Mike Greenwood, a native of Jamestown, N.D., grew up alongside his parents and two older siblings.
When he was a kid, Dr. Greenwood remembers biking to the local ballpark with his friends, forming a little caravan of kids on their bikes. Throughout his childhood, he stayed involved in sports, and he played high school baseball, football, hockey, and track. “If I played a sport, then I didn’t have to find a job, so that was my motivation,” he says.
In his high school years, Dr. Greenwood had an interest in science and math. He had worn glasses and contacts all his life, so he had a natural inclination toward eyes.
Dr. Greenwood attended the University of North Dakota, where he studied Biology and played varsity football. As a junior in college, he spent a day shadowing an ophthalmologist. After watching one cataract surgery, he knew that he wanted to be an ophthalmologist.
“When I got to his office, all the patients were happy, and the staff was happy, and he was really happy,” Dr. Greenwood says. “I watched one cataract surgery, and I realized that was it.”
After graduating, Dr. Greenwood attended medical school at the University of North Dakota School of Medicine and Health Sciences with his sights set on ophthalmology. He liked the specialty for its quick visits and surgeries, happy patients and great technology.
Dr. Greenwood completed his residency at Case Western Reserve University/University Hospitals in Cleveland, Ohio, where he was Administrative Chief Resident. During his residency, he had the opportunity to attend an American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery meeting in Boston, where he met a doctor by the name of John Berdahl. A few months later, some fortunate connections led him to the opportunity to complete his fellowship at Vance Thompson Vision.
After his first couple of weeks at Vance Thompson Vision, Dr. Greenwood has settled in well. “I love it,” he says. In his fellowship, he is most excited to develop expertise in performing complex surgeries and to further his excellence as a surgeon.
Everyone at Vance Thompson Vision is excited to welcome Dr. Greenwood and his wife, Heidi, to Sioux Falls and to Vance Thompson Vision, and we look forward to making his hope of surgical excellence a reality.
